I’ve been training with Brunel Weightlifting and my coach, Kristian McPhee, for just over two years. Wednesday I’m doing my first competition, as a novice. Although it feels like I’ve waited a long time to do my first comp, really it’s because as an over-30 lifter, I’m in that awkward age where I’m too new to enter any real comps, but not old enough to do a Masters (+35 years) competition. So I was glad to have the opportunity to get some platform experience and feel what it’s like to actually ‘perform’ this sport.
It takes place Wednesday, 30 November, at the Brunel Indoor Athletic Centre. Novice competition kicks off at 16:45 (finish 18:30), followed by an official qualifying competition (18:30 – 20:00) with Commonwealth Games lifter Owen Boxall. Free entry for spectators.
